Castaway Planet Boundary Series Book 4 eBook Eric Flint Ryk E Spoor

Decent juvenile/young adult science fiction; ie., no cussing, sex, battles, existential dilemnas. An idealized family gets stranded on a strange planet in the first few pages, then you're told how they survive and adapt for rest of the book. Interesting ideas for the alien planet, but the limitation of the plot starts get repetitious by halfway. Do not expect any resolution to their situation. I was also annoyed when on the last page the authors throw a out a surprise hook - it's obviously meant to be a series. A second annoyance, partially my fault, was that the blurbs imply this is a book is part of the "Boundary Series." It's not. It's in the "Boundary Universe" since much time has passed since the Boundary trilogy and it's a completely different character. I might have still bought it, but if I'd read the information closer I would have realized it wasn't a continuation of the story in the first three books.

Castaway Planet Boundary Series Book 4 eBook Eric Flint Ryk E Spoor Reviews

I've really enjoyed the Boundary series and others by Ryk E Spoor, but this book started slow and left me questioning the beginning. The main ship suffers an accident DURING an emergency drill when people are secured in the life pods? Is this mere coincidence or something else? We don't find the answer to that question in this book. Also, the author informs us that they only have a 1-in-20 shot of a star with a suitably habitable planet being within reach, which of course they beat the odds. Once they land, the story picks up for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good, believable characters and nice plot twists.
Spoiler Alert! Wait, I got to page 105 and skipped to the end, yes it goes straight to a sequel! The first three books on this story arc were very good books, recommend them all. This one was unexpected, and it let me down on the story line. Can it survive, will have to wait for the next one to find out!
First off I absolutely love the original Boundary book it's one of my top go to books for a nice re-read when the mood strikes , the second and third while not on par with the first still didn't disappoint. This one however is a joke. Think Lost in Space meets Swiss family Robinson centering around under 14 kids with a friendly but very predictable alien sidekick. You get rather tired quickly of parents constantly correcting and going over the same issues with the usual perfect and brilliant children, you keep waiting for a plot to gel up into something that would make this worth reading which never happens. I'm doubting Eric Flint had much to do with this tragedy except having his name tagged on to move this thing off the bargain bin where it belongs . I strongly suggest if your interested wait a while as the the price is going to drop fast
The weakest of the Boundary series. But my standards are very high after the first three.

Think Swiss Family Robinson. Basically Lost In Space in the Boundary universe. Felt like a juvenile but also too advanced for many -- far more complex than Heinlein (or Jupiter) ones. Yes, the times have advanced but those could stretch down to 10-year olds. This doesn't feel like it could go that far down.

That said, a pleasant story. Good coming-of-age elements, problem solving, and observation.
First off, this book is very atypical of the Boundary series. The only connection is reference to the Boundary world as historical backstory. It is on the surface the story of a 1950ish family stranded on an alien planet. The planet's ecology is developed mostly by description, rather than by appeal to biological plausibility. That part of the story was the most interesting part to me.

I could not shake the suspicion that the book was a put on, the whole thing an exercise in high camp. It never went all the way - maybe the authors were just messing with their readers. It might be most interesting to young teen girls, although I'm not so that could be inaccurate. Overall, if you liked the first three books of the Boundary series, you will find this is not the fourth.
I really enjoyed this book! I like everything Eric Flint writes, this was no exception. I'm looking forward to seeing the characters and the planet they are stranded on develop more depth with the next book.
This is a kids book. It continues the series, and did well enough that I enjoyed reading it AFTER reading both the previous books again. However, the writing style and content is what I used to see when reading books in the 6th grade. Not a bad story, just no 'adult' or even "P13" content. No "blood and guts", no sex (of any kind, in any way - not even a kiss!), and the "danger" is about as washed out as the amount of people you actually see killed or hurt in a "Transformers" movie (that is, "0"). Some suspense, a little "action", but mostly a hygienic accounting of some travel between planets, with some shortcuts taken on "speed of light" messaging.
