Mad.
Brutal.
Unpredictable.
And those are their good points.

Vicious. Hateful. Foul-mouthed and bad tempered... He-Dog and Balless are all of these and more but, as mercenaries go, they are not without some merit. After accepting a mission that no one wanted, He-Dog and Balless travel the treacherous Lands of the South to the glittering city of Foust. There, they find the fabled walls under a massive Beastman siege. No one in their right mind would try to get past an army of Beastmen. But He-Dog, Balless, and their companions aren't in their right minds.

Getting into Foust is utter madness.
Getting out will get them killed.

White Sands Red Steel Keith C Blackmore 9781478204190 Books

White Sands, Red Steel is an excellent Grimdark novel following a group of four mercenaries as they fight their way into a fortress under siege and become a part of the defense. Blackmore published this in 2011 and hasn’t written an additional novel on these leads, which is a pity because they are some terrific characters. Now, seven years later, it seems everything the author writes is gold. It would be nice to see him use his developed skills to give us another story or perhaps make this a series.

White Sands Red Steel Keith C Blackmore 9781478204190 Books Reviews

If you like good old story about some rough, butt kicking, determined fighers....then go ahead and read this story. It's based in the days of clubs, swords and arrows and when a man's worth was determined on the battle field. Very good story, nice twists and turns throughout, strong characters....and good fights. I have read all of Keith C Blackmore's stories and have enjoyed them all. Mountain Man series was my favorite with 131 days close behind.
When a combat-hardened, rage-fueled band of mercenaries take a commission that no one wants, it isn't Foust, a jeweled city of fable that they find at journey's end, but a desperate city breaking under the weight of a siege--and getting through the ferocious hoards of beastmen and into the city isn't really the end of the violence...for He-Dog and his crew, it's only the beginning.

This is a gritty and bloody tale with over the top action, combat and mayhem--told in a contemporary style that combines the self-interested heroics and individualized stakes of a sword and sorcery tale set against the vast stage and multiple points of view of an epic fantasy.

I loved this book. The story is very well written. I loved the characters, actually I hated He-dog and felt sorry for his companions having to put up with him. I grew to like the character. There are a few spelling and grammar mistakes, but I can overlook them fo such a page turning story. I read it in one night\early morning.

On a side note, Keith C Blackmore is a fantastic person. I went to his website to find out what the sequel was called or when it was being released. There was no info, but there was a contact me. I sent a short email asking if it was in the works and if there was a release date. I fully expected to get a form email back thanking me. I did not expect a long well written email hours later explaining that yes he is going to do a sequel, but he ran into problems with it and is not liking how it is going. He gets my respect for ever.
Another great Grim-Dark, heroic fantasy story. Maybe Keith will do a follow up some day but his 131 Days stories are set in the same general period and they are on-going and they are great also. Keith writes as well as a mature Glen Cook or David Gemmell. Great character development.
I have been a fan of Mr. Blackmore for some time and he has taken me to places I never even dreamed of. I am a 52 year old man that never read much till I found his work. I read this on my kindle app in 4 days and was constantly being drawn back to the story when I had other things to do. This novel was not what I was looking for when I found the book, but it was well worth the price. Not going to talk about story matter, just praise this man's imagination and amazing way with words. His books have inspired me and I am very hopeful he is plotting something new to crush me soon.
May the Lord Bless Keith C. Blackmore and his imagination!
I've been slow to read this...but not at all disappointed now that I've gotten to it. Keith Blackmore is one of two authors that I'll pay full retail every time (the other is John Ringo).
This book was worth every penny. Blackmore's ability to pull you into a rich, colorful world and then add in complex and flawed heroes never disappoints. To me, he is everything I love about Tolkien, Howard, Lieber, and more. I have read his horror, fantasy and sci-fi works. NONE have let me down. This one is great fun, great writing and a great story.
FWIW, I like to pay less for e-books. I would not have been troubled if this book had been a bit more expensive. For me, that's truly high praise.
Keith C Blackmore is a great writer. He writes both horror and fantasy and does both very well. According to him his horror stuff (Mountain Man and Breeds) sells really well so he has been focusing on that lately. However, once you read some of his fantasy you will be hooked. It is gory, it is crass, it is great.
This particular story follows a group of characters who are part of the fantasy world Blackmore uses in his other books (See the Troll Hunter and 131 days). The characters in this book really develop and you end up caring about them. The Beastmen whom are the "bad guys" in this book are vividly described. I cannot recommend this book enough. The only thing that disappoints me is that there is no sequel to it yet. These characters demand further stories.
Enjoy this book. An excellent way to spend $4
